Io Saturnalia! Corvinus’s household celebrates the ancient Roman festival, and Milo gets a crumb of confidence :3

I couldn’t figure out if slaves joined the Roman citizens in the festival rites in the city, but I think it’s generally impossible to avoid historical inacuracies in historical fiction.

Cheerful chants reached the villa that lay just outside the city.

‘Io Saturnalia!’

Soon enough, Milo’s master had returned, and with him a few of his friends arrived. They were happily chattering. Now that the festival rites in the city had ended, they were ready to celebrate the day together. 

Milo took a deep breath.

It was cloudy and cold, but inside was cosy. Everyone- master and slave alike- was wearing dining clothes and a pileus, the headwear of freedmen. Because on this day, everyone was equal. 

He hadn't seen master's friends in a long time. They were lying comfortably around the dining table in the triclinium. 

Gallicus, a middle-aged man excitedly nodding to everything his companions said, the gel in his hair glistening in the light of the oil lamps. 

Valeriana, a distant cousin of master Corvinus’, obsessively talking about her favourite gladiatrix while scratching the wart on her neck every now and then. 

Quintus, a younger friend purposefully taking up way more space on the couch than he needed, spitting out jokes at every opportunity, whether they were funny or not. 

But those friends weren’t the only ones dining. Each of them had brought a slave, as was custom with wealthy citizens. What wasn’t, was that these slaves were lying next to them, among them. Milo didn’t know these people. They… seemed comfortable. They talked with their masters as if it was normal. As if what they said mattered. Gallicus’ slave critiqued the food, Valeriana’s slave - who wore a cute necklace -  gave her opinions on the Neronian games that would be held next year, and Quintus’ slave straight up told his master he wasn’t funny. Milo wished he knew their names. He found their confidence fascinating, and he wanted to remember them. 

And then there was master himself. But now, master got up and disappeared for a moment, returning with another amphora. It made Milo’s fingers twitch. He was supposed to serve master. Master always made sure he remembered that. It felt so wrong; the way master poured Quintus’ cup, and then the cup of Quintus’ slave- it was so wrong. 

‘Listen, Corvinus, my jokes are funny. Do you know how I know? My wife laughs at them’, Quintus said as he watched master fill his cup. ‘I repeat: my wife.’

‘I’ll tell her you said that when we get home. I’m not sure she will laugh then’, his slave remarked. 

‘Whether you’re funny or not, I admire your attempts. But I think it may be the wine speaking for you’, master said. 

‘Yeah yeah.’ Quintus made a careless gesture when master was done. ‘Maybe you should give your slave more wine too. He looks like he’s just returned from Tartarus.’

Milo flinched as his eyes met his master’s. Knowing what was expected of him, he held up his cup. 

And then fear set in. 

Every year his master said that whatever happened on the first day of Saturnalia, wouldn’t have repercussions afterwards. But every year Milo had his doubts. His master was perfect, and Milo wasn’t. And any imperfections showing must be dealt with. It was the only way in which Milo could learn to be perfect too. 

He was scared to mess up. All he had to do was hold his cup so master could fill it. Then he had to drink the wine. 

The moment master filled his cup felt like it lasted an eternity. And Milo could do nothing as he saw how shaky his own arm was. 

When it was over, relief washed over him. He brought the cup to his lips- too quickly. His useless fingers lost their grip and the cup fell onto the ground, the liquid spilling all over the floor. 

His heart dropped and he shrunk under his master’s furious face. He was so, so stupid…

‘Io Saturnalia!’, Quintus yelled, throwing his hands in the air. 

‘Io Saturnalia’, Valeriana’s slave repeated after him, though with less enthousiasm. 

Surprised, master turned towards his friend. He opened his mouth, and Milo recognised the tenseness in his jaw. It meant anger and yelling. 

But Quintus reached forward and patted master’s arm. 

‘Come on, Corvinus! What is a feast without spilled wine?’

‘He’s right’, Gallicus said. 

Master’s expression softened. And then, he… smiled?

‘I’ll get another cup.’

His company cheered. And they cheered again when Milo finally could drink his wine. He relaxed. Admittedly, their happiness was contagious. They joked and laughed around the table, and he started to quietly laugh with them. The more food and wine they consumed, the more he loosened up. He even dared to compliment Valeriana’s slave on her necklace, and learned her name was Ariadne. Gallicus’s slave was called “Mauricus”, and Quintus’s slave introduced himself as Paris. Soon they addressed him as “Milo”, and Milo felt butterflies in his stomach. It felt as if he’d known these people for his whole life. 

The night was nearing when a musician provided joyful tibia music. Mauricus complemented the man for his talent and Valeriana clapped in her hands on the rhythm, soon joined by Ariadne. 

Milo laughed when Quintus stumbled from the couch and started dancing, his hat falling from his head. When he looked at Mauricus, the slave’s face turned red. Milo laughed again. 

Suddenly, a hand grabbed his shoulder. He looked at his master, who was mumbling something.

‘S-sorry?’, Milo asked.

‘I said- I said I’m happy I bought you, you know? What would I-I do without you? You always give your best, and no other of my slaves does that.’ 

His mumblings ended in roaring laughter. It was… odd. Milo didn’t know how to react. He patted his master on the back when his laughter turned into violent coughing. 

That his master acknowledged his hard work meant more to him than he could really fathom. 

He watched as Paris got up to dance with Quintus. He watched Ariadne laughing and clapping for them, and Mauricus burying his face in his arms. And for the first time, Milo wondered if it was even right to crave that kind of acknowledgement.

oh you know it’s bad when a swedish blog is writing about the fate of the Blues :(((( There’s a starting 11 that could in theory be used yeah, @sharpicefire made this a while back which basically uses up all players, with a few injuries and academy players included. 

There’s a few more academy players that could be used and are already registered with the senior squad, but really we need a good 9 or 10 players to be signed asap. There’s still quite a few WSL players floating around who haven’t announced their new teams yet, plus I’m kinda hoping a few that have left Villa will make the downgrade and come to Birmingham. But one way or another I just want to be put out of my misery and for someone to be announced

I had a long and realistic dream last night about finding an emulated version of a 90s cult classic video game called “Thief’s Apprentice”. The general atmosphere of the game is incredibly bizarre and similar to other weird 90s games like Eastern Mind: Lost Souls of Tong-Nou, Myst, LSD Dream Emulator, Majora’s Mask, and Paranoiascape. It’s an open-world 3D game with the really chunky prototype low-poly graphics and it is famous for almost every moral choice eventually leading to your death. The plot of the game is about a Master Thief raising three lost boys and teaching them how to steal. Master Thief grows old and one day, tells his sons to travel to a prosperous city called Veilheim and steal as much as they can in order to prove themselves. There is a whole lot of story, characterisation, hidden stuff, and plot twists, but the only real goal of the game is to get as rich as possible and bring as much of it back to your ageing father as you can. If you want, you can leave, pick up some colorful broken glass from the front yard and immediately come back, then Master Thief says he is so disappointed in all of you, and the game ends there.

Some other stuff in the game:

You’d expect the city law enforcement to quickly link the new crime wave with the three corpses held together with metal and neon-bright cloth, but everyone looks just as bad so you don’t even stand out.

The entire country is infected with a flesh-eating mutagenic plague, but it isn’t a big deal. In fact, people without any permanent injuries or deformity are seen with suspicion and prejudice. Kaolin, a friendly but lonely kid with blue hair, is one of them.

For single player mode, the in-story explanation is that you go to Veilheim, another bro goes to the island port town of Malassol, and the other bro goes to the religious capital in the mountains, Gehenna. In multiplayer, there is split-screen so you can have one player as Charming Conman crashing a dinner party and convincing all the guests to leave with him to an even better party, another as Greedy Pickpocket taking personal items from the guests when they enter the streets, and the last as Fleetfooted Housebreaker looting the villa now that everyone’s gone, and it’s Lit as Hell.

The music is either non-existent or really bad ambient electronica.

There is a powerful necromancer doing weird stuff in the wastelands surrounding Veilheim.

The plague only affects vertebrates, so insects and snails are seen as “Perfect Forms” and if you are seen hurting them in public you will get arrested. It’s okay to squish maggots, worms, and mosquitoes and things like that if they are literally eating you, though.

Because most people are decomposing, smelling good is considered an important part of polite society. The starting perfume you have access to is “Four Thieves Vinegar” which actually exists in real life. 

Greedy Pickpocket can rotate the angle of the metal slats on his belly like window blinds to hide objects he swallowed or to quickly unload goods.

The Mayor is the richest person in the city and he has the biggest villa and estate, and most normal playthroughs of the game are focused on getting into it.

There is another villa owned by an agriculture scientist that is an endless maze filled with priceless plants, fountains, and golden sunlight that is impossible to leave unless you find the one random greenhouse with a small statue of the Floating Goddess in the corner and pray to her for so long that you start to float too, then you float out a high opened window and that’s how you escape.

If you get too drunk or injured and pass out in the worst part of town, you may wake up chained to a slave ship on its way to Malassol. You can try to escape, but you must do it within 5 minutes of waking up before the ship gets too far from land and you drown trying to swim back. You can choose to stay aboard the ship and try to find your brother in Malassol, but when you reach the island you are immediately forced into a mining minigame that ends when you die.

You can get join a local election and get elected to public office, whereupon you can start your cushy life of white collar crime.

If you play as Charming Conman, you can marry pretty much everyone.

The game doesn’t have save files or player settings after you start, so if you start playing 3-person multiplayer, you’d better be able to keep it up.

The main square of Veilheim is infested with children with plague-induced broken bones held together with thick layers of gauze and ceramic tiles playing street hockey who will kill anyone that’s shorter than them. Nobody knows where they come from. Do not crouch in front of them or you will be beaten to death. There is a plot event where the Hockey Children completely overrun the entire plaza and judicial district, and the other children are forced to hide on top of huge stone pillars.

There is another plot event when an army of zealots from Gehenna invade Veilheim to purify the city of the plague, and depending on what you do to stop them, such as deliberately getting arrested to inform the city guards, walking way out into the wastelands to tell the Necromancer, sabotaging the army’s supplies yourself, or nothing, vast sections of the city might be destroyed or abandoned.

If you look hard in the Mayor’s records, you can find out that Greedy Pickpocket used to be a foreign princess who refused an arranged marriage with the Mayor’s son so he had her killed. Later, the corpse was revived by the plague, but Pickpocket is so unrecognisably rotten and was raised as a boy for so long that he doesn’t really care.

There is a fetch quest where a group of debutante girlfriends removed their organs to fit into their fashionably tight corsets, but they lost them all by accident. 

You can play the entire game without stealing anything and get rich from legitimate business, but your dad will still be disappointed in you.

The only bro capable of fast travel and teleporting between warp points is, logically, Fleetfooted Housebreaker.

Malassol is a slave/prison colony and Gehenna is obsessed with remaining plague-free to the point of burning anyone with obvious injuries alive, so it’s implied that if you play single-player, your brothers both die.

The Necromancer is actually responsible for the plague and killing him will halt his evil magic, but if you do, the everyone suddenly feels the horrible pain from their injuries and anyone whose bodies can’t function without the magic in the plague dies, including you.

Master Thief is the single oldest living being and it turns out that he and Necromancer used to be so close that when Master Thief got mortally wounded, Necromancer created the plague just to keep him alive, but it got out of hand and here we are today.

Master Thief and Mayor of Veilheim have a secret deal where the Mayor kills people, imbues their corpses with strange magic, and gives them to Master Thief to train. The message “You found 12 AMBER BEADS ... but you can’t possibly carry anything more.” actually teleports the items into the Mayor’s estate. You can find the room if you look hard enough, but it won’t have any significance unless you remember the exact items you couldn’t carry.

It’s implied that Master Thief had an emotional crisis after watching the children murdered by the Mayor being revived as malformed zombies by the Necromancer’s plague, and he sends you to Veilheim to wreck both of their plans as revenge.

Even though the game as a whole is bleak and gruesome, the interactions between the brothers are genuinely cute.

I also dreamed of looking at Thief’s Apprentice Let’s Plays on youtube and finding the “Grand Theft Auto: Veilheim” challenge where you had to steal the Horseless Rockgrease Carriage belonging to an influential nobleman and rampage for as long as possible without getting off. This is challenging because the carriage consumes rockgrease extremely quickly, you can’t refuel without getting off unless the fuel is already in properly-sized tanks, the carriage is extremely valuable so the instant you are seen with it sends the city guards on high alert, and the carriage itself will explode if it hits anything too hard. The world record so far is 16 hours 11 minutes and 41 seconds, done by befriending the nobleman to secretly store enormous quantities of fuel all over his estate and escaping into the wastelands.

There’s also stupid edits comparing Master Thief to Master Chief.

Våren 2020 - corona

Ojoj allt detta har fallit bort i allt annat. Det har varit en konstig vår och sommar 2020...

jag har jobbat och gjort mitt vanliga i veckorna mest, sen har ju corona ställt till det så att man inte riktigt kan åka runt i stan, inte träffa kompisar/släkt på ett normalt sätt.. jag har varit mycket isolerad mellan jobb och hemmet mest. Korttidspermittering under första året som tandläkare och introduktionsprogrammet satt på is (eller bara avbokades?).

Jag kan berätta mer vad jag gjort utöver det nedan! 😁

i februari när jag skrev sist så va ju livet relativt normalt. Jag kommer ihåg att vi hann fira Sabinas födelsedag vid den 9/2, men det va nog sista gången hela familjen var samlad utan att allting var så konstigt.

I början på mars va mormor och Lasse och Elena till Israel. Det va på vippen att de inte skulle komma hem. Det va precis innan allting verkligen stängdes ner på allvar. Jag är glad att mormor hann komma iväg på en resa dit hon längtat åka innan corona och all ensamhet det innebär.

Helgen 6-8 mars va jag hem till nypan och hängde där, innan Lo och jag åkte till Stockholm och träffade möhippegänget på ett café i Stockholm för lite planering.

Jag pluggade ju under våren. Sista lektionen som inte var på distans var 13 mars, även fast jag ifrågasatte om det faktiskt behövde vara det...

Den 18/3 hade jag frisörtid. Jag gjorde utväxten lite mer ”mindre synlig” och klippte igenom håret.

Samma kväll blev jag sjuk. Jag fick feber och kraftig huvudvärk och extrem snuva. Iom allt så trodde jag att det va corona och jag va hemma sjuk tom måndagen efter. På tisdagen 24/3 va jag tillbaka på jobbet igen och allt på jobbet var nu konstigt.

Iom materialbristen lämnade ftv ifrån sig skyddsutrustning och sprit till vården, och vi drog ned vår produktion på kliniken till 20%. Just den veckan var också Tumbakliniken helt stängd, och vi skickade ett team till ftv Södertälje...

efter det blev det permitteringar så småningom...

Vid påsken hade vi påskmys på jobbet den 9/4 och jag åkte sen hem till nypan och firade påsk med familjen där. Också en väldigt konstig påsk..som tur är så bor ju mamma och papp stort så vi ändå kunde va många där. På påskafton 11/4 åkte vi ut hela familjen och va vid nynäs och grillade allihopa. Det va sypermysigt!! 😍

På söndagen åkte jag till Daniel i Örebro och överraskade honom då han fyllde år den 13/4. Han blev så chockad! 😂 egentligen skulle vi ju åkt på en resa över påsken men iom att vi inte kunde resa så jobbade vi istället och Daniel jobbade då på sin födelsedag. Det va så kul att han blev så chockad!! 😂 på kvällen käkade vi bara sen gjorde jag bananpannkakor på morgonen efter som lite mysfrulle, sen åkte jag igen. Hans födelsedag skulle vi fira ytterligare på Steam Hotel några dagar senare.

Den 16/4 åkte jag med tåget efter jobbet till Västerås och mötte upp Daniel där och så va vi till Steam Hotel. Det va så häftigt hotell och riktigt nice! Vi hade ett fint rum och sen också tillgång till relaxen (eller vad det nu heter).

Vi kom dit, käkade en fiiin middag, spelade lite spel tillsammans och gick sen och njöt av relaxen. Det blev en minnesvärd kväll! Morgonen efter blev det frulle innan avfärd. Vi åkte och strosade i Västerås och åkte sen till Örebro och stannade där en natt. Vi åkte till ett fint ställe och kollade på (letade efter) ormar. Vi såg några snokar faktiskt, sen åkte vi därifrån hem till Daniel.

Dagen efter åkte vi till Stockholm och va där.

Veckan efter va pappa uppe i Lovisas lägenhet och hjälpte till med att måla om väggarna. Så på tisdagskvällen va jag via där och vi gick en promenad.

Natten till den 24 april hände något hemskt. Daniels bror dog hastigt och oväntat. Hemskt tråkigt! Sen följde en massa tråkiga saker av det 💔

Jag va dock med syskonen ut vid Lida utanför Tullinge och vi umgicks ute i naturen. det va superhärligt!

Jag träffade också Judit, min fina vän, flera gånger under våren och hon har varit stöttande i allt! ❤️

Helgen 8-10 maj va jag i Örebro med Daniel igen. Jag har tagit varje chans nu att vara med honom nu när allt annat varit så tufft. Inte nog med corona och annan sjukdom, utan att hans bror också skulle dö.. 😔

Den 15 maj va jag och Lovisa ut och käkade på restaurang! Vi va till Oyster Bar som låg i Östermalm typ i Stockholm. Det va god mat, men lite påträngande personal 🙈

Vi va sen hem och kollade på film och bara myste hon och jag.

Helgen efter kom Daniel till mig och vi va i Stockholm över natten för dagen efter bar det av mot Norrland och begravning. Framåt kl 18 tog vi nattåget från Stockholm som gick direkt upp till Boden. Det va kul och spännande att åka nattåget! Vi åt och drack något litet där i bistron sen va vi i kupén och typ spelade kort och kollade på datorn. Det va häftigt att liksom ”åka på lakanen” när tåget svängde! Och vi lyckades byta till oss en kupé i första klass, vilket ju va nice 👍🏼 när vi kom fram till Boden vid 05.45 gick vi direkt till hotellet vi skulle bo på, det va nära.

Väl framme där vilade vi lite innan vi gjorde iordning oss för begravningen som skulle vara kl 11. Efter frukost gick vi till LP-huset något kvarter bort där vi mötte upp resten av familjen och gick sen i enad trupp till pingstkyrkan på andra sidan vägen.

Det var en fin och stillsam begravning, speciell pga corona (inga kramar). Och det kändes konstigt för mig då jag inte ens träffat Daniels föräldrar förrän då... men fint att jag fick vara med!

Efter begravningen åkte vi till Daniels moster/faster som bodde vid en villa vid en stor trädgård där alla kunde umgås utomhus. Vi hade tur med vädret och det var härligt umgänge. Vi åt lite mat där och åkte en rundtur runt i Boden så Daniel fick visa sina gamla ”hoods” sen till hotellet. På kvällen åt vi pizza och kollade på en film för tidigt morgonen var det av hemåt. Vi vinkade hejdå till familjen i Boden och åkte sen söderut. Häftigt att vila genom hela Sverige så! Vi såg liksom var kanten mellan vinter/vår va och hur träden började knoppas mer och mer ju längre söderut vi kom. Vi turades om att köra och stannade några gånger för att sträcka på benen och äta mat. Strax efter Sundsvall stannade vi till och åt lunch. Tror hela resan tog 10-11 timmar..men allt gick bra tack och lov. Väl framme köpte vi hem sushi från Esa och åt hemma hos mig sen läggdags. Och det va det med den resan.

Helgen efter va jag hem till nypan för mamma och pappa skulle kolla på en båt och jag ville följa med. Vi åkte fredag morgon (jag va ju permitterad fredagar den perioden) till Askersund. Väl där provade vi båten. Daniel mötte upp oss och åkte med ut på en tur där borta. Sen åkte MaPa och jag och åt lunch inne i Askersund, ett mysigt litet ställe ändå, och åkte sen tillbaka till säljaren och slog till på båten! Fin va den och med kraftig motor!

Sen blev det en långsam förd hemåt igen. Vi va framme sent på kvällen.

På lördagen 30 maj åkte vi upp hela familjen till Högbro och va där över dagen. Det va fantastiskt väder och vi kunde umgås ute hela dagen! Alla va där utom Lovisa och Edvin och Sabina. Axel m familj, Jane m familj, MaPa, jag och sen familjen Lönnkvist och mormor. Väl där träffade vi på mammas kusin per också som va där och skulle fågelskåda 😄

Jag släpptes av hemma hos mig på vägen hem, sen umgicks jag och Lovisa på söndagen en stund.

Kommande vecka hade jag sluttenta i missionsvetenskapen (det va en hemtenta med några diskussionsfrågor bara), sen va det juni och ett år sedan examen 5 juni 2019!! Tänk att tiden gått så fort!! 😍🙌🏼🍾

Den 5/6 va jag faktiskt till Örebro då jag åkt dit redan kvällen innan. Vi åkte sen tillsammans till Axel och Annso då Annso firade sin examen den 6/6. Där samlades vi hela familjen också och firade annso, sen va vi i stjärnholm över natten.

Veckan efter va jag med Judit, med Lovisa och åkte sen till stjärnholm igen på helgen. Där va jag ute och sprang och njöt lite av solen för en gångs skull.

Vi sjösatte båten och MaPa och jag va ut med den en sväng, mysigt! 😍

Veckan efter va det ”vanlig” jobbvecka igen, fast på tisdagen träffade jag Judit igen.

Vi sågs den där gången på Kungsholmen och åt pannkakor ute vid norr Mälarstrand, såååå mysigt!! Hon är fantastisk den där! 💕 Sen va jag hem till Lovisa och sov över där 😋
